Archaeological Museum of Mycenae

αρχαιολογικο μουσειο ΜυκηνωνThe Archaeological Museum of Mycenae is located within the archaeological site of Mycenae. It is organised in such a way as to ensure the safe keeping of the archaeological material coming from the excavations in the citadel of Mycenae, the surrounding and the wider areas, as well as to serve as an exhibition space in order to inform visitors and enhance their tour experience. The museum is housed in a modern building, which was erected at the foot of the Mycenae hill and in the immediate vicinity of the citadel. The exhibition has four distinct sections and the exhibits are mostly displayed in large wall showcases. The first two rooms of the exhibition are as follows: the first is dedicated to the life of the Mycenaeans and the second room, at a lower level, to their burial customs. In the first room, which is the largest (150 m2), the exhibits under display are related to the first use of the place till the end of the prehistoric times, depending on the building complexes where they were found. In the second room (115 m2) findings from the burial sites are exhibited, starting with the Grave Circles A and B and going on with the exhibits from the tomb cemeteries scattered around the wider area of Myceanae. The other two sections constitute the subject matter of the third room (115 m2) of the exhibition. The first relates to the use of the area in Mycenae in historic times, whilst the second and last one is dedicated to the activities of the Mycenaeans, to which the uniqueness of the Mycenaen civilization is attributed.
