Small Theatre of Epidaurus

15_small theatre EPIDAVROUIn the cape “Nisi” (i.e. island) of Epidaurus, the theatre of the ancient city is well preserved in the form it took in the later years of its use. The concave, apart from few seats, is made of “titanolithos” (i.e titans’ stone, a rare stone), while the ascending stairs are made of porous stone. To the day, 9 rows with 18 lines of seats have been revealed, the initial capacity being for 2000 spectators. All the seats of the theatre and the thrones bear inscriptions with the names of sponsors and indicate the direct relation of the monument with the worship of Dionysus. The inscriptions of the monument indicate that the construction of the theatre began in the mid 4th century B.C. and continued up to the Hellenistic years adding a new part every time. It is quite possible that there had been an older, simpler theatre. In the Roman years, the orchestra becomes semicircular with the construction of a stage building closer to the concave. The lower part of this stage is preserved up to our days. Seats of the concave were later used in building the wall at the top of the second hill of the cape.
